Today's class was the final lesson on our introductory mapping skills.
1. We began with a powerpoint on the history of maps from Ancient China, to the Mappa Mundi world maps of the Middle Ages, right up to GIS and satellite imaging that we use today. We reviewed the issues of map scale - Large-Scale vs. Small-Scale
- Large Scale = Large Detail, Large Objects, Small land area
- Small Scale = Small Detail, Small Objects, Large Land Area
We finished the powerpoint with an examination of programs like Google Earth and Google Sky, and map projections that can predict sea level rise, etc.
2. We examined stereographic air photos and used the special glasses to make the images turn 3-D. We also practiced matching air photos with topographic maps.
3. We marked the Nanaimo topographic map questions, and spent some time finishing off the Canadian Atlas assignment.
