Running water is one of the most powerful energy sources on our planet. Any time you try and alter its course, there will be serious consequences...
Last class was spent analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric power. This topic is especially relevant to us in BC, since the majority of our energy is derived from this energy source. There were three key articles that we used in class
- Description of Hydroelectric Dams - BC Hydro
- Amazing Basin Dam Project
- Nile River (Aswan Dam)
It is important that we recognize that while each situation will have its unique issues, the key advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric mega-projects will be the same regardless of the river. It is important that we identify the key issues in our case studies, while also acknowledging that our knowledge can be generalized to other rivers.
dams can do wonders for the society, providing clean, renewable bountiful energy. but this privilege comes with a price. ecosytems and homes could be destroyed, especially the ones around the dam. i'm confident that advances will be achieved that will eliminate some if not all the cons of a dam.
