Our discussion of Hurricanes and Tornadoes wraps up our unit on weather.
Here is the powerpoint from the Hurricanes and Tornadoes section of the course, and we also read through the chapter in the Study Guide together today. Here is the handout that goes along with the powerpoint. Pick up the article on Cyclone Nargis in Burma in class.
Pay close attention to the last slide of the powerpoint and the 'United Nations' simulation activity. These are important discussions that help us understand why hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural hazards cause more damage and devastation in areas that suffer from poverty, corrupt governments, etc. You should be able to explain the idea of 'unnatural disasters' on your quiz, and which regions of the world are more prone to damage.
Last day we also discussed the impact of Hurricane Katrina, and its importance in pop culture and current dialogue discussing race relations, income disparity and other socio-political/racial issues at play in the United States. We watched Beyonce's Formation music video, and searched for references to Hurricane Katrina/New Orleans.
Here are some of the articles and editorials that we discussed in class concerning Formation & Queen Bey.
"Not Ready To Stop Discussing Beyonce and Formation?" - NPR, Feb. 10th, 2016
Here's another article about the making of the music video from Curbed
For those of you interested in the current US election and primaries, is an interesting article written by Eric Garner's child, and her support for Bernie Sanders. It's an interesting watch/read.
