Earthquakes - Part Two

Last day we examined the process of orogenesis, otherwise known as mountain building, and then we began our study of faulting - and earthquakes.

Today's class focused on a review of the basics of earthquakes, as well as an in-depth look at the Japanese 2011 Tsunami.

We reviewed the content from the first-half of Chapter 8 in the Study Guide.  At this point you should be familiar with:

  • What an earthquake is
  • Main causes
  • A cross-section of an earthquake (focus/epicentre)
  • How earthquakes are measured (Richter Scale)
  • Main hazards associated with earthquakes including liquefaction
  • Definition of a tsunami - risks associated - details about Japanese 2011 tsunami.

Next day we will be examining the notion of "Unnatural" vs "Natural Disasters" and talking about prevention in Vancouver for 'the big one'.  The following week we will be examining Volcanism, and then our unit test for Tectonics will be October 30th.
