Test Outline - Forests


Your test will take place next Thursday, June 13th. The big ideas that you will be assessed on are:

1. The Nature of Forests
2. Resource Management Approaches
3. Species Endangerment

You must be able to:


  • Identify the 4 main forest types by name, and on a world map - Tropical Rainforest, Temperate Rainforest, Temperate Deciduous, Taiga/Coniferous
  • You must be able to identify the forest adaptation types, key species, animals that live there, vegetation types, and the ways that the vegetation has adapted to the climate (temperature and precipitation levels
  • You should be able to read a climograph, and match different climate graphs to different types of forests
  • You should be able to discuss why forests are important for our planet
  • You should be able to identify risks facing forests - why they are being cut down/deforested - you should be able to connect this to human settlement, population growth, urbanization, cattle ranching and agriculture, logging industry, etc.
  • You should be able to discuss and write about reasons why forests are special
    • Trees can communicate with each other
    • Forest Bathing -Japanese art
    • Medicinal properties of forests
  • You should be able to discuss different approaches to resource management (Sustainability, Preservation, Exploitation) and identify different stakeholder groups that embody these approaches 
    • Ex. - Indigenous groups are more likely to support sustainable forest practices
  • You should be able to write about two different case studies, and understand why these examples are significant.  You should be able to compare and contrast the treatment of Indigenous peoples in both case studies.

  • You should be able to discuss different reasons why animals are endangered, and discuss at least 2-3 different animal case studies.  Explain why they are endangered, and why they are important
  • You should be able to discuss key aspects of poaching, and reasons why its a difficult problem to solve
  • You should be able to discuss some of the challenges facing the mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park, and how Virunga National Park is an excellent example of a concrete solution of how African people can provide sustainable eco-fiscal solutions for their own people.  Refer to website: https://virunga.org/alliance   to help provide greater background information here.

  • You should be familiar with terms such as Global North/Global South, Neo-Colonialism, Eco-Fiscal, etc. 
  • You should be able to identify and give examples of sustainability, preservation (national parks, etc.), eco-fiscal philosophies, and exploitation ethics of resource management
  • You should be able to suggest solutions (REAL) that would be effective in stopping poaching, protecting endangered animals, and in dealing with deforestation
