Earthquakes & Tsunamis Webquest

Today we are going to look at a few different websites to help us in our investigation.

SITE 1 - First, examine the following simulation at https://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-24/boxing-day-tsunami-how-the-disaster-unfolded/5977568

Use this site and the article to answer the questions on the worksheet

The Details:
1.      What was the date of the earthquake?  Where did it happen?
2.      How long did the earthquake last?  What was the magnitude of the quake?
3.      How many countries did it affect?   What was the death toll?
4.      What plate boundary exists in Indonesia and this part of the world?
5.      Examine the map of impact –
a.      Which countries had the highest death tolls?
b.      How many people had displaced people from the earthquake/tsunami?

SITE 2 - Special Report - Boxing Day Anniversary

We will watch the first 10 minutes or so of this case study.

2. What was the sign that people could have used to recognize that a tsunami was coming?

Click on the settings, and examine Worldwide earthquakes 4.5+, play around with some of the other settings.  Go to ‘significant worldwide’.  Which country has had significant earthquake activity this month?

SITE 4 - Play the Stop Disasters Game - choose the Tsunami option

Ensure that you do the following:
·       Find out which buildings are most likely to withstand damage
·       Find out what types of defense are built to protect against tsunamis
·       Find out what types of actions communities must take to help prepare their citizens
·       Determine when we should tear down structures, and when we should reinforce them.
