Earthquake and Tsunami Case Studies

We have spent the first week of November exploring two main case studies, to help us understand the impact that megathrust earthquakes and large tsunamis can have on a population.  Specifically we examined:

  • The Indian Ocean/Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 (Indonesia)
  • Japanese Tsunami of 2011
Both of these tsunamis were caused by megathrust earthquakes, and both of these events were devastating.  The following resources are helpful in reviewing the material:

We also explored the notion of 'Unnatural Disasters'.  Last day's class looked at the notion of natural hazards vs. natural disasters, and we explored what this concept meant.  We compared and contrasted the two case studies above, and looked at what factors make the impact of a natural disaster more serious.  Below is the resources from Wednesday's class.

Natural vs. Unnatural disasters handout

This is also an additional handout that is extremely helpful in preparing and understanding why the Boxing Day/Indian Ocean Tsunami was such a devastating event.
