Infographic Assignment - Volcanoes & Earthquakes

As part of your last major assignment of Term 1, you will be exploring the case study of a natural disaster (volcano, earthquake) in more detail.  You may not choose the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami of 2011, or the Boxing Day Earthquake/Tsunami of 2004.

Here is the assignment outline, in case you need a digital copy.  The criteria is included in the assignment.

THE 1 PAGER INFOGRAPHIC – VOLCANOES & EARTHQUAKES

A One Pager is a single-page response that shows your understanding of information you have learned about a particular case study.   It is a way of showing your individual, unique understanding of the key concepts in a graphic format.  It is a way to be creative and experimental; it is a way to respond to the ideas, and show your abilities to summarize.   Infographics are pretty fantastic – they are visual representations of important data, and they allow us to convey content without overwhelming text.

You are going to create an Infographic about a natural disaster ~ either an earthquake or a volcanic explosion.  You will research the causes of the natural hazard, and then explore the impact this event had the on the land and environment, as well as the damage on humans, communities and ecosystems.

BE SURE TO READ THE CRITERIA THOROUGHLY, TO ENSURE YOU INCLUDE APPROPRIATE DETAILS

Task:

You have options here – create your own infographic using a specific Infographic program (like Piktochart), or just use Microsoft Word or Publisher.

2. Nature of human settlement where event occurred (was this close to a city, an urban area, heavily populated area, etc.)

3. Causes of Natural Hazard – (plate boundary type, volcano type, etc.)

·       5. Effects of the natural disaster on PEOPLE, ECONOMY, LAND, AND SPECIES/ECOSYSTEMS  - include death toll, extent of property damage, and costs to rebuild, etc.

·       7. What challenges did people face after the event?  What variables made the damage/death toll higher?
·       8. Were there any lessons or changes made after the event to improve response for the future?
·       9. CONCLUSION/ANALYSIS – Overall, how did this event affect the communities that were affected by the disaster? Explore the impacts from multiple perspectives.

Infographic should be maximum 2 pages.

Infographic should have clear headings, strong grammar (in your own words), and interesting visuals and images
