Rocks, Caves, & Groundwater Issues Quiz Outline


Your Groundwater & Water Issues quiz will be this January 17, 2019

You should be able to do the following:

  • Identify the rock cycle and key characteristics of the rock cycle. 
  • Identify key features of caves (stalactites, stalagmites, rock pillars, sinkholes), the risks facing caves, and why they are important to protect
  • Identify all the key parts of the water cycle
  • Identify and label a diagram of an aquifer 
  • Identify key causes of groundwater contamination - and challenges for people associated with groundwater contamination (ex. disease & death in children due to diarrhea)
  • Be able to discuss the key case studies we discussed in class (Ogallala Aquifer, Mexico city is sinking, water shortage in India, sinkholes in Florida) - all case studies are linked in previous posts
  • You should also be able to briefly discuss the solution of solar crops as a way of providing effective aid to farmers in warm climates
  • You should also be able to explain terms such as "Day Zero" and "Virtual Water/Water Footprint' to discuss impending water shortages, and the idea that much of the water consumed on the planet is the processing and creation of different consumer items. 
  • You should be able to discuss the situation regarding freshwater shortages in First Peoples' communities in Canada
You will refer to unit handouts, Chapter 15 & Chapter 21 in your study guide, and to the articles and videos referred to in class. 

Quiz Format - MC, diagram labelling, short answer, and critical thinking questions.  You will also be asked to answer questions using Mexico City or Ogallala Aquifer Case Study Data Booklets that we analysed in class.
