Glaciers - Benefits and Risks Webquest

For today's assignment, you will be exploring a variety of different websites online.  For some sites, you will just play around, for others, you are expected to answer questions that will be assessed for thought and detail by Ms. Sawatsky.  We are building up towards your written assignment on glaciers that will be due on Friday, Feb 21, 2020.  Let's get started. 


All About Glaciers ~ Webquest

For this assignment, you will need access to a computer/Ipad as well as a Google Cardboard viewer and a phone.  You will need to download the Youtube app if you don't have it already. 

PART 1 - Who lives in the Arctic? Whose cultures are at risk?  Record your answers.

QUESTION #1 - Record the different Indigenous groups in the Arctic and Greenland.

2. Head to this website to find out about the Sami people

QUESTION #2 - In which 4 countries can I find the Sami people?  They are considered to be nomadic herders.  What animal do they traditionally care for?

PART 2 - EXPLORING GLACIERS UP CLOSE!  

For this section, you will be exploring glaciers using a google cardboard viewer. No need for notes, simply follow the instructions.  The idea is to learn and get up close to glaciers. 


The first two videos are pretty simple, to get your eyes adapted to it.. 

360 Video 1 - Into an Arctic Glacier  - open this in your Youtube app, and then put it into your cardboard viewers.  It's 3 minutes, ensure that you spin around, look up, look down, etc. 

360 Video 2 - 360 Inside an Ice Cave -  same instructions as above, explore the ice cave by looking around.  Imagine yourself inside of it. Only a minute long..

PART 2 -QUESTION #1:  Why are ice sheets and glaciers considered to be so fragile?  Record three possibilities.

Part 3 - What's the Science Behind Glaciers & Climate? 
Why are glaciers such central parts of the way our planet functions?  Pay close attention to the following sources and take notes when needed.  The websites are intended to help you learn more about the scientific research happening in the Arctic.

QUESTION #1 - What are two effects of melting glaciers from the video/website that are most interesting to you?  Explain why this information is personally meaningful.

Glaciers and Sea Level Rise
  • Interactive Map - Sea Level Rise -Explore what will happen in Vancouver- Surging Seas. Start at 0 degrees of temperature rise and then stop at each increment to see what happens.  Move around on the map and see which parts of the GVRD will be hardest hit.  Find your house and see what will happen. 
QUESTION #2 - Which municipalities will be hardest hit by a rise in sea level of 2 degrees? 

QUESTION #3 - Why do you think people are unwilling to take significant action on climate change, even though we know the effects of sea level rise will be so extreme? 
QUESTION #4 - What is the purpose of the C40 initiative? 

QUESTION #5 - Go into the interactive map and explore Vancouver.  What initiatives are we doing to combat climate change?  What are some of the risks we face? 

QUESTION #6 - Explore two other cities (at least!) on the map.  What are two interesting things you found? 

Part 4 - Geopolitics - who owns the Arctic? 

The idea of 'owning the Arctic' is a very controversial one. However there is a lot at risk, and lots to gain.  Watch the following video in its entirety.  Take notes and pause when needed. This is a case study that will be on your Quest for this unit.

 Respond to ONE of the following prompts in PARAGRAPH FORM after watching the videos.  Remember 'rule of 3' (3 key points for a full responses).
