Intro to Volcanoes and Volcanism

Today's class (Monday/Tuesday), focused on an introduction to Volcanoes and Volcanism.  We will continue looking at this topic online tomorrow.   Volcanoes are super powerful forces that exist all over Planet Earth.  They are found at plate boundaries, and on hot spots.  We are going to take a closer look at them, to uncover a little bit more about the different types, the features that are created by them, and how they affect humans.

Today's task in class is the following:

  • Complete the notes on Geysers, Hot Spots and Volcanoes, using your Study Guide (text) and the This Earth textbook found in class.
  • Then, do some basic research on a famous earthquake or volcanic explosion.  The instructions are on Teams, and at the end of today's handout.   Some of the videos below will help you with your research.
  • Watch the volcano videos here to prepare for our lesson tomorrow on Teams.
VOLCANO VIDEOSWatch and take notes on the key points for each video.  They are all short
What do volcanologists do?  What's the job all about?
** Note: Thursday/Friday we will look at Earthquakes and Tsunamis, and then on Monday/Tuesday next week (October 5/6), you will have an in-class Test to complete on Tectonics.  I will discuss this on Wednesday online as well as in class together.
