Volcanoes, Earthquakes & Tsunamis : ONLINE LESSON

 Hi folks,

Looking forwards to meeting with you this afternoon.  I apologize for being away, but these are Covid times.  My daughter got a cold and runny nose, and then it spread through the house.  No Covid! But I will be back tomorrow. =)  Thanks for working hard with Mr. Ross, the TOC.

Plan for Today:

1. I am going to review the material that you studied Monday/Tuesday, including the basics of Volcanoes. I will also introduce the other main Tectonic hazards, earthquakes and tsunamis.

2. Here is the powerpoint Volcanoes & Earthquakes that I am going to go over with youThere are lots of really important notes and details here.  Feel free to download the ppt and check out the extra links and details.

3. After we review the material, you will be asked to watch two short documentaries on some of the biggest tsunamis that we have experienced in recent history

They are each 30 minutes and tell the story of survivors, who lived through these tragedies.  Warning - the videos are very sad, in my many cases.  However, it is an important way of honoring these communities by listening to their stories and witnessing their experiences.

4. You will then complete an assignment on the Tsunamis.  There are 8 questions to answer that are based on both documentaries.  You will be focusing on the human decisions, infrastructure of countries and the variables that turned these natural hazards into natural disasters

Please complete assignment for next class (Thursday/Friday) so that you are ready to discuss the case studies.   Assignment should be submitted on Teams

PLAN FOR THURSDAY/FRIDAY:
  • Review volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, plate tectonic theory
  • Discuss in detail the idea of 'unnatural disasters'
  • Discuss how to prepare for earthquake in Cascades/Pacific Northwest
  • Review test outline & cheat sheet that you can prepare over weekend
MONDAY/TUESDAY
  • Briefly review practice quiz questions
  • Complete test on Tectonics
