Rivers: A Source of Life

Today's class finished up our discussion on glaciers. We discussed the videos from the webquest, and some of the parts of it that we found interesting.  We discussed the impacts of rising sea levels, and the prospects for the future.

We also discussed the connection between ocean currents and melting glaciers - which is really well explained here - The Gulf Stream Explained - Kurtzegatz

In small groups, we discussed the impacts of rising sea levels, including migration, displacement, species loss, etc.

We did some river trivia, and introduced our new topic. We connected it to our study of glaciers, by watching part of Human Planet together, and thinking about the efforts that some people go to, to get to school, and their deep connection to rivers.

After that we discussed the basics of rivers, focusing on the life stages of rivers, and the different features that are found within the different life stages.  These included:

Meanders and Oxbow Lakes -

Deltas -

Waterfalls

Here is the powerpoint that we went through today, as well as the notes and handouts.  Here is the River handout on Life Cycles that we explored as well.  We will continue with the notion of Life Cycles of rivers next week, and we will also begin an investigation of Rivers at Risk.

There is no homework for this weekend, other than to ensure that you are well-rested for the last three weeks of Quarter 1!
