GROUP B: ONLINE LESSON - THURSDAY

Yesterday we started a brief introduction to glaciers.   We looked at how their 'health', and ability to stay frozen greatly impacts the health of our oceans, which in turn control and determine our global climate patterns.

In class tomorrow, we will look at some of the specific features of glaciated landscapes - landforms like horns/pyramidal peaks, ridges, lakes, and crevasses.

Today, you will look at some of the benefits of glaciers, and also some of the risks facing them.  This will prepare you for our lesson tomorrow, and also, will be material that you will use to answer the test questions for this unit.

Task for Today:

1. Read the reading created by Ms. Sawatsky that gives an overview of glaciers, as well as identifies some of the key risks facing them, and the benefits they provide us with.

2. Watch a few videos about some of the topics, particularly on the risks of melting ice, as well as the risks associated with mountaineering and tourism.

READING - WHAT ARE GLACIERS AND WHY DO THEY MATTER?

  • Review the reading, and highlight key points and details
VIDEOS - Risks Facing Glaciers
  • Watch the following videos and take notes on the key risks facing glaciers - both focus on how glaciers serve as indicators and evidence of climate change
Video 1 - Thwaites Glacier - Why Scientists are Concerned About it - VOX
Video 2 - He's Watching this Glacier Melt Before his eyes - National Geographic
Video 3 - Impacts of Tourism on Mt. Everest - Why People are Dying

VIDEOS - How Do Humans Interact with Glaciers?

You might also want to review the last two pages of your Study Guide: Chapter 13 - Glacial Ice, where it explains the benefits and risks of glaciers.   Keep your notes from today's lesson, as you will use them in your end of unit assignment.

Want to learn more?  Take a look at some of the optional videos that were posted yesterday.  Glaciated landscapes are incredibly interesting!  Don't be afraid to be 'nerdy' and enjoy learning.
See you tomorrow!
