Today we did a review of water issues, and in particular, a discussion on Climate Change and its impacts on water.
Here is the powerpoint for your review on Water Cycle Issues, Climate Change and Intro to Glaciers
We learned about the importance of warming oceans, and the negative impacts that can stem from their increased temperature.
From there, we made the link between oceans and glaciers, and how glaciers are incredibly important 'caretakers' of the ocean - by staying frozen, and maintaining their capacity for albedo, they are able to help keep things cool, and maintain the salinity balance in the ocean.
Let's get started by taking a look at glaciers, and finding out a bit more about them.
PART 1 - Google Earth Tour - Glaciers
Glaciers of the World Tour- go through the following Tour that Ms. Sawatsky has created for you.
- Ensure that you are reading the text boxes for each location
- Looking at the different photos
- Moving the locations and maps around to check out the different places
- Once the tour opens, click on PRESENT! Or the Play button, then there should be 8 locations for you to take a look at.
- VIDEO 2 - Climate 101: Glaciers - National Geographic
- What are the types of glaciers?
- Describe some ways how glaciers help us learn about climate change.
- VIDEO 3 - How Do Glaciers Shape the Landscape?
- What is freeze-thaw weathering?
- What is plucking?
- What is abrasion?
- What kind of materials do glaciers carry, transport, and deposit
- VIDEO 4 - Excellent video on Glaciers + Innovation/Inventions - the Human Geography side of glaciers - How To Grow a Glacier
- What is the rainshadow area of a mountain?
- Do you think this is a viable solution for the future?
- Read pages 47-52 in your Study Guide and take notes
