Spheres and Stuff

Today we got started with all the 'good stuff' that is Geography. Our focus was on the 4 spheres of Geography, so of the big ideas that relate to our understanding of the natural world, and an introduction to the notion of Geopolitics.

Here is the note sheet that we completed together:  The Nature of Geography and the powerpoint that we reviewed together - Spheres and Stuff.

Homework Assignment: What is Where, Why There, Why Care - Geo Analysis Practice

The homework for next class is to familiarize yourself with a current events situation, and to try to analyse it using the big ideas of Geography.  Do the following;

1. Choose a topic from the 'human geography' options - Protests in Hong Kong, Conflict in Kashmir, Venezuelan Crisis, or one of your choice.   Or a 'physical geography' option - "Ocean Blob" or fires in Amazon Rainforest.  Here are some links to get you started, you don't have to use them.
2. Find two different, reputable sources to gain information from

3. Complete a draft analysis.  This does not have to be typed, but should be fairly detailed.  Your analysis should include headings of the three different sections

SECTION 1 - WHAT IS WHERE
  • What's happening in this place (Who, What, Where, When)
  • Description of natural/human features
SECTION 2 - WHY THERE?
  • Describe the place - what characteristics, reasons and history made this event or natural feature show up in this location?
SECTION 3 - WHY CARE?
  • What's the issue about?  What should it matter to us?
  • What's going to/could happen next?
  • How does the connect to other events, places, etc.
